Mount Moroto is the highest mountain in the Karamoja region, rising to about 3,082 meters above sea level and forming part of the Mount Moroto Forest Reserve. The mountain stands dramatically above the plains and offers some of the best hiking and trekking experiences in northeastern Uganda.

The hike combines spectacular landscapes, wildlife, cultural encounters with the Tepeth and Karamojong communities, and panoramic views across Karamoja and even into Kenya on clear days.
Location & Access
Mount Moroto sits just outside Moroto, making it one of the most accessible mountains in the Karamoja sub-region.
Getting there:
• Road: Kampala → Mbale → Soroti → Moroto (about 9–11 hours)
• Air: Charter flights to Moroto Airstrip, followed by a short drive to the mountain base.
Most hikers stay one night in Moroto town before beginning the trek early in the morning. 
Main Hiking Routes on Mount Moroto
Mount Moroto offers several trails depending on the difficulty, time available, and adventure level.
1️⃣ St. Lawrence Waterfall Trail (Half-Day Hike)
Best for: Casual hikers, beginners, and day visitors.
Starting point: Moroto town
Elevation gain: ~600 m
Maximum altitude: ~1,900 m
This is the most popular hiking route on Mount Moroto. The trail climbs gradually through rocky hills and vegetation until reaching a natural spring and waterfall pool high on the mountain ridge.
This hike is considered moderate to challenging because of the steep sections.
2️⃣ Tapac Trail to Imagit Peak
Best for: Adventure hikers and mountaineers.
Starting point: Tapac Trading Centre
Elevation gain: up to 1,800 m
This route climbs toward Imagit Peak, one of the highest points on the mountain.
3️⃣ Three Peaks Expedition
Best for: Serious hikers and trekking groups.
This expedition connects the three highest peaks of Mount Moroto:
• Sokodek Peak – 3,083 m
• Sologomo Peak – 3,027 m
• Imagit Peak – 2,773 m 
Total ascent: about 1,800 m
This is the most challenging trek, offering breathtaking ridge walks and dramatic landscapes.

What Our Treks Include
All trekking experiences are guided by knowledgeable local guides who are familiar with the terrain, culture, and wildlife of Karamoja. The price also includes government taxes and a contribution that supports local communities. For overnight treks, we provide shared camping equipment such as tents, sleeping mats, and sleeping bags. Porters assist with carrying group camping equipment and supplies during the trek.
If guests prefer assistance with personal luggage, a private porter can be arranged in advance for an additional $30 per day.
Meals and Refreshments
The meals provided depend on the duration of the trek:
• Half-Day Trek: Drinking water is provided.
• Full-Day Trek: Includes snacks, a packed lunch, and drinking water.
• 2–3 Day Treks: All meals during the trek, along with snacks and water, are included.
Meals are simple, fresh, and often inspired by local cuisine, giving visitors a taste of the region’s culture.

Prices may be adjusted up to 30 days before departure if necessary due to changes in fuel costs, transportation fees, government policies, or major currency fluctuations.
Your trekking package includes:

• Traditional meals, snacks, and drinks (water, tea, and coffee) during the trek

What to Bring
To enjoy your trekking experience comfortably, we recommend bringing:
• A medium-size backpack (around 45L)
• Refillable water bottles (about 3L total) or a hydration pack
• A reusable lunch container
• Lightweight hiking clothes, including trousers and a long-sleeved shirt
• Rain protection and a windproof jacket
• Strong hiking boots suitable for rocky terrain
• Sun protection, such as sunscreen, a hat, or a scarf
Important Information
Before starting the trek, please keep in mind:
• Shower facilities are not available during the trek. Eco-friendly bush toilets will be arranged where necessary.
• Guests should carry their own snacks, personal items, and about 3 litres of water each day.
• Temperatures during the day may reach 35°C, while mornings and evenings can become cool and windy, sometimes around 8°C.
• Some sections of the trail pass through tall grass, so clothing that covers arms and legs is recommended.
